Lessons FAQ

Where do we meet for our surf lesson?

Your confirmation email will include detailed directions and a google map link to the exact location. For the Palisades Location, we meet at the southern end of the Will Rogers Parking lot off of Temescal.

For our Venice and Marina del Rey location, we meet at the southern end of the parking lot next to the Venice Fishing Pier. For our Santa Monica location we meet at the Bay St. Parking lot just south of the Santa Monica Pier.

Is there a best location?
No location is best. We have handpicked these locations as they offer the best range of waves for beginner surfers to intermediate surfers. That said, each location changes with regard to the waves and tides. If you are flexible on location or start time, we suggest giving us a call to discuss the optimal booking time personalized for your ability.
What is the largest amount of people you can accommodate?
Private lessons are for groups of up to 7 people. For groups larger than 7, please contact us, or fill out a form on our events page.
When is the best time to schedule my surf lesson?
The best time to schedule your surf lessons depends on the beach, tides, waves, and your surfing ability. We suggest giving us a call to discuss the optimal booking time personalized for you.
Can I request a specific surf instructor?
Absolutely! We are always happy to pair you with a specific surf coach. When booking please put their name in the notes field.
Can I add additional surf instructors to our lesson?
Absolutely! When booking click the desired amount of instructors.
Do you offer surf photo packages?
Yes! We offer surf photo packages. Our professional surf photographer will come for the duration of the whole lesson to capture your sick waves, smiles, and best moments. The cost is $200. Please state in the notes you are interested in a photo package. Subject to photographer availability.
What should I bring to my lesson?
We recommend bringing a bathing suit, towel, water, snacks, hat and most importantly sunscreen!
How many lessons until I can stand up and surf alone?
Each person is completely different, and it is impossible to give absolutes. That said the typical beginner surfer will stand up numerous times during their first lesson with Sunrise. However, if your goal is to successfully catch waves without a coach, we recommend a lesson package, so you will have more time to progress with a coach. One of the beautiful parts of surfing is that your learning will never stop.
Do you offer video analysis or surf skate lessons?
Yes. Video analysis and surf skate lessons are available by request only. Please Contact Us for more information.
Can we rent surf equipment after our surf lesson?
Yes. We charge $50/day for boards and $30/day for wetsuits. Rentals are subject to availability, but if interested we will let you know in advance. Overnight rentals are charged for an additional day. For rentals, please give us a call
Do you have instructors that speak other languages?
Our instructors speak many different languages. If you are interested in a non-English language, please contact us, and we will do our best to accommodate you.
What is your cancellation policy?
Prior to 72 hours of booking start time, there is an option to reschedule or cancel your booking. Please visit our Terms and Conditions page for our full policy.
