Surfing in Venice Beach

Whether you're a first-time surfer or a seasoned shredder, Venice Beach is a vibrant playground of waves, culture, and coastal energy. As the heart of LA’s surf scene, Venice blends mellow beach vibes with an eclectic local flavor — all set against a backdrop of palm trees, art walls, and the iconic boardwalk.

This is where it all began for us. Venice is home to our very first Sunrise Surf Academy location, and many of our instructors grew up surfing here daily. From mellow rollers to punchy peaks, we know this beach inside and out — and we’re stoked to share it with you.

We offer year-round private and group surf lessons, along with our popular kids summer surf camp right here in Venice. Whether you're looking to stand up on your first wave or build confidence in your surf skills, this is the perfect place to start.

🌊 Surf Guide: Venice Beach

  • Wave Type: Beach break (sandy bottom) — great for all levels
  • Best Season: Year-round — consistent swell with seasonal variety
  • Best Time of Day: Mornings, before the onshore winds pick up
  • Local Coffee Pick: ☕️ Cow's End Café — two blocks from the lineup

⚙️ Ideal Surf Conditions

  • Swell Direction: SW to WNW — a combo of both produces the best shape
  • Wind: Light offshore (from the northeast or east is ideal)
  • Surf Height: Best in the chest- to head-high range; can hold shape even when overhead
  • Tide: Medium incoming tide is typically the sweet spot
