Memorial Day is more than the unofficial start of summer. It is a moment to breathe, to reflect, and to remember those who never came home. At Sunrise Surf Academy, we began the weekend with quiet gratitude before the boards ever hit the water, and we carry that spirit into every session we teach.

Then the ocean called, the waves answered, and summer officially began.

The Waves This Weekend? Absolutely Perfect for Surf Lessons

We couldn't have scripted better conditions for the start of summer. The Pacific delivered clean, consistent sets all weekend long — the kind of waves that make first-timers fall in love with surfing and give our more advanced students something real to work with.

The mellow, glassy faces were tailor-made for our beginner surf lessons — students who had never stood on a board before were riding waves by their second attempt. Our instructors kept sessions small and hands-on, which is how we always do it: we believe every student deserves direct, personalized coaching in the water, not from the shore.

Meanwhile, our intermediate and advanced groups were threading turns and working on their positioning in the pocket — that satisfying combination of challenge and flow that keeps surfers coming back for more.

Summer Surf Camp Starts in One Week — Don't Wait

This Memorial Day weekend was the perfect preview of what's coming. Our summer surf camp begins in just one week, and if this weekend is any indication, the ocean is ready to put on a show.

Our summer surf camp is built for kids and teens who want more than a single lesson — it's a full immersion in ocean culture. Each day campers spend time in the water with certified surf instructors, learning not just how to surf but how to read the ocean, how to stay safe, and how to respect the lineup and the environment.

Spots are genuinely limited — we keep our surf camp groups small on purpose. Small groups mean more time in the water, more personalized coaching, and a better experience for every camper. If your child has been asking to learn to surf, there is no better time, no better place, and no better team to learn with.

What to Expect at Sunrise Surf Camp

Every morning begins with a surf check and ocean safety briefing. Campers then divide into skill-based groups — complete beginners through intermediate surfers — so everyone is challenged at the right level. Afternoons include board maintenance basics, surf film, and free surf time with instructors in the water. It is a full day, every day, all week long.

Parents: all equipment is provided, sunscreen is mandatory, and our instructor-to-camper ratio is the lowest on the coast. Your kids are in great hands.
