  <p>If you stepped outside anywhere in LA this week, you already know. The valleys hit the triple digits, the news vans were out, and even the folks who never check a forecast were talking about it. The <a href="https://www.weather.gov" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Weather Service</a> has heat advisories and excessive heat warnings stacked up across the region this week, and the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/extreme-heat/about/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CDC's guidance on extreme heat</a> has been our go-to refresher for staff all week. But out at <a href="https://sunrisesurfacademy.com/surf-locations/venice-beach">Venice</a>, Will Rogers, and <a href="https://sunrisesurfacademy.com/surf-locations/zuma-beach">Zuma</a>, our groms had something most of the county didn't: an ocean right at their feet.</p>

    <span class="tag">More Than Just Camp</span>
    <p>This wasn't only a camp story. A wave of families booked <a href="https://sunrisesurfacademy.com/lessons">private and group lessons</a> with us specifically to beat the heat this week, some of them first-timers who had never been in the water with us before. Turns out a heat wave is a great reason to finally try that first lesson, and we loved having them in the lineup alongside our regular groms.</p>

  <h2>Why the Coast Stayed Cool When Everywhere Else Didn't</h2>

  <p>This was the question our coaches kept coming back to all week, and it turned into the best kind of impromptu science lesson. The valleys and inland communities were baking because a big ridge of high pressure parked itself over the region and trapped hot, dry air in place. Out on the coast, that same system had almost no grip. As <a href="https://www.noaa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NOAA</a> explains it, the ocean holds its temperature far more steadily than land does, so the water stayed close to its usual summer range no matter how hot the air got a few miles inland. That temperature difference pulls in a cool onshore breeze, which is the same reason a beach day always feels ten or fifteen degrees milder than a backyard in the Valley.</p>

  <h2>What Our Campers and Lesson Families Actually Learned</h2>

  <p>We turned the heat wave into the week's real curriculum, for camp groups and lesson families alike. Here's what got covered on the sand and in the water:</p>

  <p>For a camp that already ran its Surf Fitness and Wellness week, this felt like the field test. Campers weren't just told to stay hydrated and watch for warning signs, they got to feel exactly why those rules exist, and our new lesson families got the same crash course on day one.</p>

  <h2>How We Kept It Safe While We Kept the Lesson Going</h2>

    <p>None of this meant getting loose on the fundamentals. Our staff kept extra water on deck all day, pulled kids into shade for breaks between water sessions, and watched closely for anyone showing signs of overheating. Sunscreen checks happened more often than usual. A heat wave like this one is no joke, and treating it as a teaching moment never meant treating it casually.</p>
